Spelling Dictionaries

April 25, 2019

Cindex uses the open-source spell-checker Hunspell. Hunspell is used in major web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera), email clients such as Thunderbird, and office suites such as OpenOffice. Beyond the dictionary (US English) provided with Cindex, many additional dictionaries are available. The following notes explain how to download and install dictionaries.

Language Dictionaries

Language dictionaries for Hunspell available on several web sites. The following directions apply to the OpenOffice website:

  1. Download the required language dictionary from the OpenOffice website.
  2. The downloaded file will have the .oxt filename extension. Change the name of the extension from .oxt to .zip and unzip the file. (If you have downloaded the file from a site other than OpenOffice, the original filename extension might not be .oxt).
  3. Inside the unzipped folder (or in a folder within it) will be a file with the extension .aff and a file with the extension .dic. The two files will be named using an ISO convention for representing languages and country variants. For example: en_US.aff and en_US.dic (US English); en_AU.aff and en_AU.dic (Australian English); nl_NL.aff and nl_NL.dic (Dutch). Files must be correctly named for Cindex to recognize the language and any country variant.

NOTE: the folder might also contain a .dic file with 'hyph' as part of its name. You should ignore this file.
  4. Copy or drag the .aff file and the .dic file to the following folder:

Windows: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Indexing Research\Cindex4.0 (if your disk is not named C, substitute the name of your disk)

Mac: Macintosh HD:Library:Spelling (if your disk is not named Macintosh HD, substitute the name of your disk)
